Just what is Physical Culture?

Physical culture is a health and strength training movement that originated during the 19th century in Germany, England, and the United States that was replaced in the 1940's by what was to become known as Bodybuilding.

Physical culture is a difficult concept to relate to in our day and age. As civilization advances, we are becoming less reliant on our physical nature to accomplish everyday tasks and less aware of physical culture as a whole.Physical Culture is also an old school word meaning Training for Health and Strength, so that you have Supreme Vitality for all your endeavors in life. It also means not being over-specialized but decent in basically all forms of Physical Culture.

Most people train in the form of a workout. They go to the gym and are there for a set period of time. Perhaps it’s a class. Or maybe they hit the Weights and/or cardio equipment. This is fine, but it’s not the only option. Not even close.
Also with this people will typically train 2 to 4 times a week. Once again, this works out great for basic Health and Fitness.
But what if you want more? If you go deep into Physical Culture you’ll find there’s so many options available, so many ways to Train, and tools to practice with.

Training Tools include but are not limited to:
Barbells, Dumbbells, Indian Clubs, Maces, Hammers, Cables, Kettlebells, Ab Wheel, Gymnastic Rings, other Gymnastic Apparatus, your own body and the thousands of ways you can use that, Swimming, Rock Climbing, Grip Training Tools,, Horseshoes to Bend, Isometrics, Power Rack, ad infinitum (to infinity)!

Also it is not concerned merely with the real of exercise and getting stronger and building better health and bigger muscles,it is also concerned with improving YOU the humans being mentally as well as physically.

Notice how many guys who workout with weights are shallow and concerned only with the body, and who can be really rude  and condescending to others, and set bad examples for people...and I;m not just slamming the drug usage either.

Accroding to the late Eugen Sandow the aims of Physical Culture where to develop the human body to its greatest potential in strength, health, vitality, vigor, longivity and muscular development  all the while improving the person in mental health as well.

Now how does bodybuilding which concentrates mainly on building big showy muscles stand upo next to physical culture?

The World Physical Culture Association

As of this blog the World Physical Culture Association is taking the first step out of my mind and into reality.

The goal of the WPCA is to preserve and promote the practical physical culture training methods of such old time luminaries as Alan Calvert, Bob Hoffman, George F. Jowett, Earle Liederman , Mark H. Berry , Joseph Curtis Hise. etc.

The mission of the World Physical Culture Association is to: (1) promote the ideal of developing a classic physique as  was held desirable in the Victorian era, (2) demonstrate what kind of body can be developed naturally,(3) preserve & learn from the history of the pre-roid,pre-bodybuilding Physical Culture era, (4) serve as a source of education & inspiration to all; and (5) help initiate a Renaissance of Classic Physical Culture training in the 21st Century!
